Calamity Jane
Calamity (Martha Jane Canary) is acknowledged by the author not to be the historical character of that name. As presented in the books, she is a young woman in her late teens or early twenties who fled a convent school to join a freight-driving crew led by Dobe Killem. Initially she made herself useful by stepping in for their drunken cook, but soon learned how to manage a team of heavy horses, fight with a whip, and shoot competently with either a .36-calibre Navy Colt or a Winchester carbine (both chosen to suit her smaller, less muscular frame). She has several adventures of her own in addition to intermittently associating with the Floating Outfit. While enjoying an on-off physical relationship with Mark Counter, it is mutually understood that they are only what a later century would call "Friends with benefits", and she enjoys other male company routinely, including on one occasion the Ysabel Kid (in White Stallion, Red Mare).
Jim Saddler
Jim Saddler series is told in gritty first-person style of narration that made the Carmody books so distinctive. Of the seven books that comprise Saddler's adventures, however, four are little more than straight re-writes of Carmody novels; A Dirty Way to Die (Tough Bullet), Wildcat Woman (Screaming on the Wire, with Jessie James' daughter replacing Billy the Kid's brother), Colorado Crossing (Hangtown) and Hot as a Pistol (The Killers). Of the rest, Yukon Ride is particularly notable, in that Saddler has to transport the body of a dead judge from the Yukon border to San Francisco, with surprising results..

The Gunsmith's background is a little mysterious. Clint Adams was raised in the East and came West at an early age when he discovered an affinity for guns. Once he put on a holster, he discovered he could also draw a gun with amazing speed. Clint lost his best friend, Wild Bill Hickok, when Hickok was shot in the back by the coward Jack McCall. He's never forgotten that, and his one fear is of being shot in the same way. That's why whenever someone tries to bushwhack him he becomes incensed. The Gunsmith is not afraid to take on any man - or woman - and he'll ride until the day he dies ... later rather than sooner, if he has anything to say about it.

Today, of course, Gold Medal paperbacks — and not just the westerns — are collector's items, and anyone who has a complete set possesses not only a tidy investment, but also a wonderful selection of great fiction.
