England, 1975. Neville Lark, self-proclaimed 'investigator of the unusual,' is drawn into a brutal murder case in the city of Chester. This is a masterful short tale involving a man's creeping obsession with a pair of strange statues that bookend his favourite lunch spot. The language is beautiful and creates a wonderful sense of time and place, you can practically feel the bitter North Sea winds whipping in at you. The statues themselves are the touchstone to the story and it is their presence, back-story and relationship to the protagonist that makes this an effective and chilling piece of fiction.
