Tracey Alley

Biography

I was born, raised and still live in sunny south-east Queensland where I live with my dog and two cats.

I enjoy travel, boxing, yoga, horse-riding and would love to learn photography and scuba-diving - my two new challenges for the year.

I've been writing for as long as I can remember but found fantasy through role-playing and Dungeons & Dragons - since then I've never looked back. I love to read and write fantasy - the escapism is wonderful.

I have degrees in Ancient History, where I specialised in Egyptology, and Comparative Religions, where I specialised in ancient pagan religions. I incorporate a lot of that into my work, using old myths and legends and religious practices.

  • The Sword and the Dragon (Book One of The Wardstone Trilogy) on Oct. 01, 2010

This book is a monster and not just in size. M. R. Mathias has managed to do something extremely difficult in the fantasy genre - create something new and unique. Well written and compelling it literally turns the pages itself. I would compare this to Lord of the Rings except that LOTR couldn't hold my interest like this book. Mathias' characters are rich and well developed, the story flows easily and the reader is lost in the incredible world that's been created. I will confess that I really wasn't expecting this novel to be as engaging as it was, a lot of hype can sometimes just be a lot of hype. In this case it is well deserved. Congratulations M.R. Mathias. If you like fantasy then you will absolutely love this book. I cannot wait for the sequel.

M.R. Mathias has achieved what so many fantasy writers wish they could - something completely unique and original. You'll find few if any cliché's in this mammoth saga. Do not be at all put off by the length, it practically reads itself. Mathias has a wonderful manner of showing the reader the action in such a way you feel almost a part of the novel yourself. Tight writing style, not too wordy or overly descriptive, obviously MR. Mathias follows the rule that 'less is more'. A thoroughly enjoyable read I would recommend to anyone. Even if fantasy is not your typical genre the characters and plot line are enough to engage almost anyone.

If you're looking for something light hearted then I definitely can't recommend this book. The Butcher's Boy grabs you from the first page and does not let go until the wonderfully shock ending. It's a pulse pounding, page turner. The characters are so realistic and the inclusion of Lucy the dog is a touch of sheer genius. If you enjoy paranormal ghost stories you will LOVE this one. I'm not usually a fan of horror but Michael Robb takes you on a roller coaster ride that is unbelievably chilling. Highly, highly recommended
