Amy tries desperately hard to be a good wife and mother. She puts her whole heart into doing the best she can. But will her best ever be good enough for this man? "Mud and Gold" is the second book in the three-volume "Promises to Keep". It follows directly on from Book One, "Sentence of Marriage".

I agree with all comments blow - great view of early NZ's women. Very easy read. I read all 3 of the series and am now waiting for Shayne to give us more!

I have now read all three books, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. It has been my first experience of reading books on an electronic device, but after a few pages I was hooked. All these three books have been interesting and got me hooked right from the start. Recommend to anyone who enjoys well written stories from an era that has long gone. Five stars for all

After reading the first two books in the series, there is nothing more I can really add to all of the other 5-star reviews. It's gratifying to find the type of reading I prefer in the the deluge of action, vampire, sci-fi, and apocolyptic that is available. Well-written, with attention to formatting, spelling, and punctuation, which, as a new Kindle owner, I have discovered is a far bigger issue than I would have thought. Will be purchasing the third in the series.

Absolutely riveting. Amy keeps on getting more and more lousy hands dealt to her. I could not read some of the descriptions of Charlie forcing himself too soon on her, my stomach felt every ache. On to the last one...hopefully there is happiness for Amy.

Awesome book or I should say books, The series was very well written. I read the whole series and am reading it again to a friend who was very surprised how great the books are seeing he is not into reading. Very well done.

Really loved this series. Couldn't wait to get on to the next book. New Zealand in the pioneering days so hard for women. Got angry with Amy at times for putting up with so much.

This is an awesome series. I totally loved reading them and was glad it ended the way it did. Would love to read a follow up on Amy's two children that lived to know if they have as hard of time as their mom did.
