Rookie detective Joseph Lindahl is a psychology graduate and thinks he knows what the kidnapper wants - but colleagues are sceptical. From the short description I jumped to the assumption that this story would be a gruesome account of several kidnappings and murders of children. Instead I found a very fast paced and suspenseful mystery with great characters and a terrific ending. Editing is the only flaw in an other wise great story. I'd give it a 4.5 if possible, so it's a 4.0 since the editing holds it back from getting an overall excellent rating. It's a shame the author didn't spend a little more time on editing before publishing this.

Wow! What a great read. This is the one of the best books I've read at Smashwords, for free or purchase. I do hope the author will go back and perform a first class edit of the book because the story deserves it. Presently there are many words missing or misspelled. I would have liked to know what happened in the end to the Judge and to Mason. Normally with the editing that is needed I would give any book a 4.0, but since the story and characters are so well written I'll stretch that to a 5.0 and hope the author cleans it up.

Never has a free book captivated me as this one. I am very impressed with the flow of the work - very fast-passed, but never rushed (except where the author wanted you to feel that). I also appreciated that, while I am from another country and occupation, I had no trouble understanding any of the jargon used. Crowson worked things in such a way that any lay person could understand the technicalities of the police work and occasional local slang/accents.

I would have liked more fleshing-out of the characters a bit more...a bit more background to help me understand the different relationship dynamics in the work (but this is just my quirk and does not take away from the story at all).

Finally, I have to tip my hat to the absolute brilliant notion of offering this free. There are more than one of us hooked and the author will be making sales from now on. Good marketing!

Really good mix. A good plot, good mistery, good characters, good ending. I enjoyed reading this e-book, by far better than some more expensive detective paper books that I have read.

Five stars? Is that enough?

Top notch book in every way. The pacing is perfect, except for the part about keeping folks up 'til 4 AM two nights in a row.

Very compelling - I couldn't stop 'til I'd finished!! Couldn't agree with the guy's motives but couldn't help feeling sorry for him either!!

A puzzling page turner which raises some interesting ethical questions, and kept me interested to the end. Loved the fact that the crime is solve by a young black recruit who does what he knows is right....
