Between The Land and the Sea by Derrolyn Anderson
5 STARS
I was really into the story and cared about what was happening in the
characters lives. The characters where believeable.
This is the first of four books in the series. I look forward to see what
happens in the rest of the books.
Marina has traveled around the world with her father. She has never
gone to school just had lots of tutors. Now her father is going to
Afganastan and thinks it is to dangerous to take her with him. He is
sending her to live with her Aunt Abigail and cousin Cruz for a year.
Cruz is six months older than her, a senior in high school. He loves to
design womens clothes. He is a outcast in high school as one really
good friend.
Marina is going to her first school as a senior and taking most of the
same classes as Cruz. Marina with her tutoring is a head of most of her
classes but her father wants her to go for the social life of a school for once.
Marina mother died in child birth and her father never talks about his
wife. In fact has no pictures of her but tells Marina that she looks like her.
Marina has never lived by the ocean and doesn't know how to swim.
She almosts drowns from a sneak wave and a mermaid saves her and looks
a lot like her.
I really liked this book that I was given in exchange of honest review by
Librarything.

Between the Land and the Sea
By Derrolyn Anderson

Marina’s father is leaving for Afghanistan too do research on agriculture but since it is not safe for his teenage daughter he sends Marina to a small California coastal town to live with her aunt and her cousin. Shortly after she arrives she is swept into the ocean and rescued by what turn out to be her other aunt, a mermaid. Once Marina finds out that her mother who had died giving birth turn her had been an actual mermaid never having attended school before seems the least of her problems.
This is a very unique book a half-mermaid girl is being lured to the ocean, what may seem innocent turns out to be sinister with nightmare prophetic dreams that have her walking in her sleep towards the ocean. I may be biased mermaids have always been my favorite mythological creatures, but Derrolyn Anderson did a fantastic job with this book she was so wonderfully descriptive there was one scene in particular were Marina had stepped on glass that I cringed with phantom pains of my own. I also enjoyed the other characters she was able to put enough background to them that they all could have their own stories but not so much to take the focus away from the main plot and Marina. Definitely worth the read and I can’t wait to read The Moon and The Tide book two of Marina’s Tales.

This book was a guilty pleasure for me. I have enjoyed the few mermaid books I've read, and this is at or near the top of my list in that genre. The characters were enjoyable and the romance was sweet, exciting, and age appropriate. I liked the pace the author used to reveal facts about the mermaid world and the main character's place in it. She didn't drag it out too long, and she didn't spill it all at once. I'm looking forward to giving the second book a try. Great YA read, good for any 14 year old I know.

This is my first time posting a review. I loved the book! It took me back to a time when I wanted to be a mermaid to swim in the ocean with the dolphins. The author made me fall in love with the characters. My favorite character was Aunt Evie. Who wouldn't love to have someone buy you whatever you could wish for, take you to wonderful places and let you borrow very expensive cars. In the book as in life we all have decisions to make to choose right or wrong, love or life. I can't wait to read the next book.

The actions, reactions, and feelings of the characters seem realistic.

Ethan is an complicated, understanding and interesting character. He is the perfect match for Marina.

Marina develops well throughout the story. She is very mysterious. As the story goes on you find out more and more about her and start to understand her better. Marina isn't very good with opening up and sharing things with others.

I can see why Marina and Ethan are together. Their lives are so very similar. They are both extremely caring and protective with each other. They don't doubt each other and would believe whatever the other said. That I'd say is true trust and is hard to find. Their love is very strong and intimate. I must say that I love reading about them being together. I love how Megan and Cruz are always making fun of them. You can tell straight away that they have a very bumpy road ahead of them.

Cruz is very supportive and sweet. I understand his reaction from when he found out about his dad. He seems to see the best in everyone. He is able to stay grounded when people are rude to him.

Megan is understanding and seems pretty pushy. I'd say she's a bit girly. She'd be a pretty good match for Cruz.

I am actually kinda upset that Cruz and Megan didn't end up together. They'd be a cute couple. Although Cruz seems like he'd be more interested in guys, I think he and Megan would be great together.

Martin is a great father. I'm dissapointed and feel Marina's pain when he had moved her over to Aptos so he could go to Afganistan. If it were somewhere else safer, I would be furious. However it is a very dangerous place he is in, and I understand his need to protect her. Even though I am dissapointed in him moving Marina to Aptos and going somewhere else, I would be extremely mad at him if he had taking her along. For one he'd be failing his job as a father in some ways. Also we wouldn't get to read that magnificent adventure in Aptos. I'd like to congratulate him on winning the award - if he were real!!! Hahaha.

Did this book meet my high expectations? Almost, because I could guess quite some of the events that happened in the story.

Would I recommend it and who? Yes. I'd recommend it to all fantasy and romance lovers.

This was an amazing story. The descriptions of the beautiful mermaids was so vivid you could almost see them in your mind. This story is about Marina and her search for who she is and who her mother was. She goes to her Aunt Abby's and cousin Cruz's house for her senior year while her father was away in Afghanistan. She inadvertently meets Lorelei the mermaid and then embarks on a journey to discover herself. With the help of Cruz,Megan and Ethan the hunk also her boyfriend she searches for her answers, where she finds she must make a very important decision.
This was a wonderfully written book and I can not wait to read Marina's Tales.

Follow marina as she discovers the meaning of friendship, family and first love. With vivid descriptions and attention to detail, I felt a connection to human and mythical charcters alike. I look forward to more in this series. A must read.

I really enjoyed this story. Never read any mermaid stories and was totally immersed. Lots of characters intermingled well within the main story. An excellent read .
