Smashwords book reviews by S.E. Batt

  • Teacup Mountain on Sep. 18, 2012

I really enjoyed Teacup Mountain. Being a recent graduate myself, it hit a lot of notes which resonated with me. It's a great call-back to life in education, and the characters feel real and three-dimensional. While Teacup Mountain was great, I thought the bonus story, Crystal Wishes, was fantastic. Totally engrossed from the start and was left wondering what was going to happen next when it ended. Very inspirational and moving at times!
  • Sub-Textual Evidence for the Existence of Alien Life and the Extrapolation of Internet Protocols on Oct. 24, 2012

A really charming story, written with solid prose and amusing quirks. Highly enjoyed it!
  • Night of the Aurora (Salmon Run - Book 1) on Aug. 20, 2013

I'll admit that I haven't been a hug fan of sci-fi in the past. Not that I dislike it in any way; it's just a genre I didn't gravitate to often. J.A. Marlow has shown me exactly what I've been missing out on all these years. What I like most about this story is that the sci-fi element is very sudden. It sounds like a bad thing, but it's done just right; the quick cut betweeen idealistic, cozy Alaskan town and alien spaceship is as jarring to the reader as it is to the MC, yet enough is hidden at the start of the surprise to keep the sense of exploration and wonder alive. Masterfully done. The book is set up so that it's open for sequels, which is convenient, given that there are some. I just hope Nanuk makes a return. He's my favourite!
  • Morph on Nov. 15, 2013

To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into when I downloaded this book, but the premise sounded really fun, so I gave it a shot. I'm really glad I did. Despite the fact it's only 1,430 words long, it's not a word too short or too long. It explores a very funny concept with just the right words and timing. I love the way it was written, and some of the lines within left a humour author like myself green with envy! I hope the author releases more humour-related work in the future.
