Terry R Barca

Biography

I’m an author who lives and works in the Dandenong Ranges, on the eastern edge of Melbourne Australia.
I take one day at a time but occasionally I’m attacked by several days at once.
My amazing wife and I have lived in The Hills for forty-three years.
My favourite colour is green and so is my favourite car.
I started my working life as a Primary School Teacher in the early 1970s.
Since then I have been a stained glass craftsman, furniture restorer, restorer of Player Pianos and music rolls, author (twenty one books so far, seventeen audiobooks, another on the way), photographer, basketball trading card manufacturer, basketball coach, basketball player, basketball referee, part-time shop assistant, newspaper columnist, homeschool dad, husband, father, grandfather, and a few other bits and pieces, and not in this order.
I’m fascinated by people, but I prefer the company of dogs.
I’m not frightened of dying, but sometimes life scares the hell out of me.
I think that birds are cool but I don’t believe that they spend any time thinking about me, even though I give them lots of stale bread, and the occasional pizza crust........ ungrateful bastards!

Smashwords Interview

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That's easy. I don't have a choice.......I have to write! If too much time goes by without putting pen to paper, I feel 'twitchy'. Apart from that, I must say that I enjoy the reaction of my readers. 'SCHOOME' was my first published book and it was a labour of love. It was not only a retelling of our adventure, it was the book we wished we had read before we started our adventure.
As for my fiction writing: I love to get get feedback from my readers. It is hard to write everyday without the knowledge that people are going to read and enjoy what you write.
What do your fans mean to you?
In my world 'fans' are people who like the way I write, and they keep coming back for more........ so they means a lot..... no fans [readers], no reason to write. God bless them one and all!

  • Murder is Handy on June 24, 2019

Murder is Handy by Sharon McGregor I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It avoids the cliches of the tradition ‘whodunit’ and wisely concentrates on building characters, especially the main character. She’s a woman who has returned to the small town where she grew up. There are minor references to the book that started the series, and we get to know all the characters and what drives their lives in this tight community. I have come to love what we call ‘Rural Crime’ novels, here in Australia and one of my friends and fellow writer, Sandi Wallace has done very well in this genre. A small town is a small town in any part of the world. This book is set in Canada, but it could be anywhere in the English speaking world. Dogs play an interesting roll in revealing character, and it is a dog that sets the story rolling in the opening chapter. The author applies a gentle touch and creates a vibrant atmosphere despite the central event being a murder. I was doing what a lot of readers do during the opening sentences, guessing where this story was going. I was surprised by what happened (pleasantly so), and I was hooked. A few words about the book cover: I was wading through the masses of ‘new releases’ (mostly romances!), and it was easy to skip through the generic covers until I noticed the excellent design for Murder is Handy. So it seems that covers are important. I like that the main character is on the edge of the investigation, almost reluctant at times, even though she is in a relationship with the local policeman. I like the authors ‘gentle’ style. Nothing is left out, and the murderer is slowly revealed, as it would be in real life. The ending worked well, and when it was finished, I was left with the feeling that I had gotten to know these people and I cared about them. Terry R Barca
