How do you approach cover design?
I approach cover design from a graphic design perspective. My first career is as a graphic designer, and I graduated with a degree in graphic communications. Later, I founded my own graphic and web design company. I freelanced as a graphic designer for over a decade. Having the opportunity to design my own book covers is a passion of mine. I also format print books. It's an incredible experience to write and edit my books, but it's especially amazing to create the cover. I consider the book cover to be the icing on the cake.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My four favorite books include The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien and Faeries by Brian Froud. These books inspired me to illustrate my own books. Growing up, I was inspired by Anna Sewell's Black Beauty because I loved the idea of an animal telling a story. Later on, I read The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle and decided I wanted to write fiction some day. Finally, I can't leave out The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. As an adolescent, I was moved by stories about kids just like me growing up without privilege and struggling to find their place in the world.
