Susan Skylark

Biography

A medical professional turned mother and wife, Susan pretends to be a writer in those rare, cherished moments when the world for a moment is silent. She entered a writing contest in 8th grade and was awarded an honorable mention, which was the first and last time she ever entered a writing contest, what this tells us about her skill I do not know. She has never written a vampire love saga or a pioneer romance and has no plans to do either, and has thus stunted her once budding career!

She enjoys fantasy, fairy tales, and adventure stories and her writing reflects this quaint affectation. She considers Happy Endings (more or less) a requisite to good literature and sanity, though real stories never, truly end.

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I have always loved stories and have been reading them or imagining my own for as long as I can remember, but in the pre-computer days I wrote very little as it was a tedious and time consuming process (of course that was in elementary school), but once I hit junior high and discovered computers, I began to write much more often and have been doing so ever since, at least when I get the time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have always loved fantasy (at least good fantasy) and the stories you can tell in another world, but sometimes the stories take themselves too seriously (as do we). The hardest thing in the world to write, as far as I am concerned, is a good, humorous fairy tale. Patricia Wrede does it well in her 'Dealing with Dragons' series and I have wanted to write something along those lines for some time. 'On Princesses' is my first attempt, I enjoy it but I may have a peculiar sense of humor.

This story should be used with caution, not taken internally, and avoided by those who have a congenital lack of humor, who take themselves and the world too seriously, and those looking for something serious to read. This little saga pokes fun at bureaucracy, paperwork, heroes, and the latest fad in looming environmental crises. Find out how to save the world in six easy lessons, or not.

Yes, the world needs another fairytale, just like your grandmother needs a Dwarf Grunge Band. Of course this is not just another fairy tale, it is a completely irreverent celebration of geeks, fairy goth-mothers, small annoying dogs, and yes, princesses. This is a foible, not a fable, thus it has no redeeming value whatsoever. Enjoy!

Beautiful, lyrical, intriguing. A charming escape into Fairyland with a curious twist on elf-lore. For the most part, the Christian undertone is a lovely background to the story, except for one small incident near the middle where the main character forgets for a time that she is not a street evangelist; it was quite jarring and nearly made me drop the book in dismay, for it did not fit the character or the story at all, but the story quickly found its footing and finished well. It has been years since a book kept me reading after bedtime, this story certainly kept me up late! Highly recommended.

An amusing and fairly accurate look into the mind of Mr. Darcy. If you love Pride and Prejudice, you should find this a good read.
