Reviews of Smashwords Style Guide by Mark Coker

Brian D. Clark reviewed on April 12, 2016

I read Mark Coker's Style guide and migrated my book according to his instructions. I also downloaded his MS Word template and used his formats exactly as he suggested. I actually created a separate template that I deleted all the styles I don't need for Smashwords and renamed the ones I do need starting the with the letters SW (e.g., SWTitle) so anytime I write I know I'm using the proper formats. My book has been "on the shelf" for twenty years... When I used Mark Coker's instructions and put it through the grinder, it passed the first time. Kudo's to Mark for a job well done! If you want to e-Publish, pay attention to what Mark has written and use his template. It will make your upload a breeze.

This is required reading for anyone who is going to indie-publish on Smashwords, iBooks or B&N. Concisely written with a dash of humor.

I formatted my ebooks using this guide and it worked like a charm. My books made it onto SW, iBooks and B&N with no problem. Thanks Mark Coker for all your help.

This book helped me make up my mind NOT to format my ebook myself. Reading this showed me how complex it really is. And I'm a bit miffed by how complex it is. I'm thinking in this day and age it should be pretty easy to format an eBook. I mean, mine does not have any special formatting or pictures or anything like that. To use this guide you have to be an MS Word expert . . . and I'm not that is for sure. Thanks to the author for making recommendations to professionals who can do this for me.

Coker walks you through a complex process with simple and easy-to-follow directions. By the time you are done with this book you will have advanced skills in using MS Word. Plus there is a dash of humor here and there which is good because it's pretty dry material to begin with. Also, I highly recommend anyone thinking of publishing an eBook to read Coker's other books on eBook marketing.

A valuable resource for any indie author. Read it and you will know how to format your ebook. I thought it should be simpler, but when you consider your book is going to many distributors it's amazing how this works. After you complete the formatting and put your book on Smashwords, from here it will go to Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble Nook and some others. This formatting is only one part of the task, first I have to write a good book. Even after it is published, I have to do the marketing. A lot of work!

You'll need top notch MS Word skills to do the layout for your book on Smashwords. This step by step guide is absolutely essential for anyone who plans to publish on Smashwords. I think my skills are there but I guess I'll find out. If not this book includes references to some experts who can do the layout for you for a fee. If it's too tough to figure out, it might be best to spend your time writing another book and pay someone to do the layout for you.

This is required reading for anyone who wants to publish an eBook on Smashwords. It is well written and easy to follow, but I don't have the skills on MS Word to do it myself. If I publish on here, I'm going to find a friend who knows MS Word and pay them to do the formatting. I didn't understand why this is so complicated, but then found out, after you upload it here it also goes to Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble and several other eBook retailers. Very impressive.

Excellent instructions to follow for formatting your ebook. I can't wait until I'm ready to publish mine. It looks a bit tedious though.
