Reviews of Smashwords Style Guide by Mark Coker

Yikes! Formatting a book for smashwords looks really complicated. I'm going to hire someone to format my book that is for sure. I skimmed this book and read several sections in detail. It clearly takes master level skills using MS Word to format your book for the smashwords 'meat-grinder.' Now I'm searching for someone who can format my book when it's ready. Any suggestions? Apart from that, this book is written with easy to follow step by step details and the author has a bit of a sense of humor he tosses in once in a while.

This is a well written step-by-step guide to formatting your book for smashwords. I have not published yet, but after looking through this I assume it will work. However I do have some concerns about how complicated this is. It's 2016! Why do we have to put our book document through the 'meat grinder' when there are simple tools like Adobe PDF used by people all over the world?

Using the bookmark method:
I often go back to the style guide to refresh my memory on certain things. There are so many sites out there publishing now, I have decided to stick with Smashwords. It's easy and there are a lot of different avenues to choose from. Anyway back to bookmarks. I followed instructions, but my return hyperlink kept going to my page break above my TOC. Now I did have the rec_TOC, I made sure It was correct. I sat there thinking what the heck I was doing wrong. So out of curiosity, I changed my font type of my TOC, (it was the same as my wording before my page break) and whala! It worked! I never dreamed. So you might want to let others no. Or maybe you have and I have missed it somewhere. So if anyone is having the same problem, change the font of your TOC, it may help.

Amazing book. I learned more about Word than I ever imagined. Clever, amusing, and packed with information. I highly recommend, and not just for formatting a novel. You will learn stuff you never knew you didn't know. (At least I did!) I followed his steps and my novel was accepted right away.

One thing that I learned the hard way that wasn't in the book. I started my document as a Compatible with 97-2003, and yet when it was saved by the little 'save' icon on the ribbon on top, it wound up as a .docx. I use that little icon on top All The Time, but now for safety, with my next Smashwords books, I will save with "Save as" each time. (Maybe it's just my computer, but the book started as a 97-2003 as instructed, and it did wind up as a docx, I promise.)

Thorough and easy to understand. I think I'd like to have a checklist in the back with the steps outlined without all the explanation -- so that the next time I format a book I can buzz through it. I'll remember the steps if I just see them listed.

I have this book always on my kindle and often refer to it. It's the best guide I've found for formatting an ebook. I love the way it is broken into tiny simple babysteps. I recommend it constantly to clients and other writers.
