Brenda Cothern

Biography

Brenda is unlike most authors since she only began writing 2010. She never wrote fan-fic but has been an avid D&D player for over 35 years. Painting pictures and telling stories for gamers to see in their imaginations came naturally and now she does the same in her novels.

She is an International best-selling author and her love for reading fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary erotic romance has allowed her to apply her Bachelor’s degrees in management and marketing to her new career.
Her first best-seller in 2012, Coming Home, was Brenda's first attempt at a short story and admittedly ‘shorts’ are not her forte. Brenda’s Shadows universe has been compared to True Blood or Anita Blake by fans and her Mad Dogs series have received rave reviews for its uniqueness. Brenda utilizes her 20+ years in the leather & kink lifestyle to make her BDSM books (Undercover Love, Fire & Ice, & Barely Restrained) realistic. They are also what Brenda considers her best work.

Brenda travels the country appearing at leather events and conventions. She frequently is asked to speak on panels about writing and BDSM/kink related topics or teach classes on Negotiation, Flogging, or Rope Bondage. When Brenda is not writing; she lives and breathes in the Tampa Bay gay leather community. She was a member of the Tampa Leather Club for 5 years before they disbanded and the only associate member to receive an award (2011) for her dedication toward making the club events all they can be. In 2014, Brenda also received the award for Ms. Community Service 2015 from the Florida Puppy Contest organizers. In 2015, Brenda was again honored for her service to the community when she was pinned ‘Mama’s Tampa Wench’ by Sandy ‘Mama’ Reinhardt who has been an activist for over forty years. Less than 2000 leather community members worldwide have received this honor. Brenda was also member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for 5 years. In Nov., she became (the first) Ms. Florida Leather n' Fetish Pride (2016) and in Jan. 2017, she purchased the weekend event that is held in Florida annually.

Brenda resides in Tampa with her husband of 20+ years, 5 cats, a rabbit named Alice, and a turtle named Tammy (the rabbit & turtle aren't hers). She is the mother of three beautiful daughters and a grandmother of two gorgeous granddaughters, a grandson, and another grandchild on the way!

Brenda loves to hear from her fans so don’t hesitate to contact her online!

Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
Unlike most authors who will tell you they have been writing since they were a kid, I didn't start writing until around 2005. I say 'around' because back then it wasn't anything serious. I just started writing the back story to my D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) character, Zarkina, who has been rattling around in my head for the last 31 years.

For over four years, the first three chapters of her story sat on my PC and every now and then I would add to it. It's wasn't until the economy tanked and I lost my job as a COO (Chief Operations Officer) in 2009, they I really started to write. After becoming miserable and frustrated searching for a job, my husband said, "Why don't you finish Zarkina's book?" I am sure he just was trying to give me a distraction so he wouldn't have to listen to my b*tching about my lack of success in finding a job.

I started writing more of Zarkina's tale and her voice kept growing louder and louder in my head with every page I wrote. I went to conventions and sat in on writing panels and joined writer's groups online to learn more. By the time the first half of Zarkina's story was written and I had investigated & learned about publishing, other voices made themselves known.

Since then, writing has become not only my full time job but also a compulsion... and it is all my husband's fault!
What motivated you to become an indie author instead of going with a traditional publishing house?
The more I learned about writing the more I wanted to be educated about the publishing aspects. Since I was a COO, I was familiar with contracts, distributors, vendors, and the such. I think this gave me an advantage when I was looking into my publishing options. I spoke with several authors and did my homework on the pros & cons of becoming self published. So much so, that I now speak every year at a convention about it and have put the information on my website.

This was in 2009 and self publishing wasn't even picking up speed yet. Most indie authors were looked down upon and comments about them 'not being a real author' were frequently tossed about.

However, the real deciding factor was cost. I looked into several different publishing house submission requirements and almost had a heart attack. They did not accept digital copies of a manuscript but wanted a hard copy, double spaced, bound manuscript mailed to them.
No big deal right? Well, Fates was 330 pages, over 150k words, and once I double spaced it, it was over 700 pages! To put that in perspective, that is almost a ream of copy paper for every printed manuscript I wanted to send out. Add to that the cost of binding the manuscript to the publishers specifications, around $70 a piece, at the time, and the shipping and I was looking at $150 or so per manuscript that I wanted to send out. And that did not even guarantee it would even be looked at!

Since I was unemployed at the time, I just didn't have the money to gamble on 'hopefully they will look at it." I wasn't writing to get rich anyways so self pub was the better option for me.

Excellent! I am amazed that this was a free read. I have not been sucked into a great historical in a long, long time! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome novella. I look forward to checking out more of Domin's work!
  • The New Boy on June 28, 2012

This was a good YA gay story about coming out and finding young love. The story started out very well and held my attention but after awhile, Like Jonovan said below, I was wondering where the story was going. I really enjoyed the twist ending and would recommend this for any young reader, not just young gay readers.

    Excellent...
  • The Sun Guardian: Book One of the Vanguards of Viridor on Jan. 02, 2020

If you like high fantasy that will keep you turning the pages (and giving up sleep to finish!), you will love this story. It is rare to find interesting world building, gay characters, and a great storyline, but Cleveland has accomplished it wonderfully. If you are looking for a book full of sex in a high fantasy setting this is not the book for you, but if you'd rather have a character and story driven novel...well, this book is worth much more than the $2.99 price! Off to grab book 2...
