Interview with Melissa Wright

Published 2019-08-30.
Who are your favorite authors?
Too many to choose. I always love stories by Maggie Stiefvater, Rainbow Rowell, George RR Martin, Laini Taylor, Neil Gaiman.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
There's very little that I spend not doing something book related, but I love to get outdoors, or to paint and draw. I'm learning digital art lately and spending a lot of time in Photoshop. It's a challenge, but not the stressful sort.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually by the adamant recommendation of friends. My TBR list is so long already, but I have to listen when someone I trust demands I read their new find because it will change my life. ;)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Absolutely. It was FREY, the first book in a series that I'm still writing, and the experience irrevocably changed my life. I did not set out to be an author, I only wanted to dabble in writing, but all it took was that one story to get me hooked. It was the best thing that's ever happened to me.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with the team at Gene Mollica Studio, where they build the covers from scratch. We discuss the story and genre, physical characteristics of the main characters, and ideas for design and potential layout. Once we've picked the right models and wardrobe, Gene gets to work on photography and design. It's incredible to see a character you've had in your head come to life like that and the final art blows me away every time.
What do you read for pleasure?
My favorites are young adult, epic fantasy, and paranormal. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, so I love a skilled narrator. While I read quite a bit on productivity and writing, I much prefer magic and a strong heroine.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read quite a bit on my phone, simply because it's always with me. The Audible app, the Kindle app, and Apple Books are my go-to reading apps.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Definitely first in series free. I've had great luck offering my series starters for readers to try without risk, and no doubt I owe the FREY series success to that. I also try to make the books available at as many outlets as possible, including libraries and audio, so readers can find them where they prefer to shop.
Describe your desk
Small and clean. I'm far more productive without a mess in sight, so I like to have a clear desktop. There's nothing but my keyboard, planner, pen cup, and hot tea when I'm working. Above my monitor I keep a sticker sheet, which lets me mark the progress of my current work, and some fantasy artwork from my favorite illustrators.
What are you working on next?
I'm excited to get started on book two of Bad Medicine, a paranormal romance series set around three witch sisters and the trouble that tends to follow them. I've also been working on ideas for a new epic fantasy series with a bit of royalty, revenge, and magic.
