Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
After hearing how traditionally published authors only get to keep a small percentage of their royalties, and realizing I would have almost no control over my content, title, and book cover if I went with a publisher, I decided indie was the best way to go. I've never even tried to get published the traditional way.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a very "author friendly" company, doing all they can to support us. Smashwords gives us the ability to not only publish on their site, but also on many other popular venues. They are always looking for more retailers willing too sell Smashwords books.

Smashwords book reviews by Lauralynn Elliott

  • Hush Money (Talent Chronicles) on Aug. 20, 2010

I don't read a lot of YA books. They have to be really special to keep my attention. This one was good! I could relate to the characters, even though they were young enough to be my kids. Susan Bischoff did a great job building those characters. And the action scenes...VERY believable. The only complaint I have is that it left me wanting more. :) I would recommend this book to young adults and not so young adults.
  • Dark King of the North (Book III of The Kobalos Trilogy) on Aug. 20, 2010

This was the last book of the Kobalos Trilogy, so I was looking for everything to wrap up nicely. I think the author did this well. Most of the things I was hoping for at the end actually happened, so I was pleased with that as well. Good job, Ty. I don't like to include spoilers in my reviews, so I'll be kind of vague here, but there was one character that was supposed to be sort of a bad guy, yet I never felt real animosity toward him. Ty did a great job painting one picture of the character, but also making the reader feel as if there was a little more to the guy; that he wasn't quite what he seemed. And the ending showed that my feelings all along had been true. This book was as good as the other two in the trilogy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ty Johnston is a great writer, and I'm glad I found him!
  • Glimpse (The Retroact Saga Book 1) on Nov. 07, 2010

There are many things to like about this book. But I think it's the characters that I like best. They are rich, believable, flawed, and multi-layered. Even though the characters are much, much younger than me, I can still feel for them. I love how the author was able to develop the teenage characters as well as the adults. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
  • Glimmer (The Retroact Saga Book 2) on Nov. 16, 2010

Stacey has kept me entertained once again. I'm really picky about YA books, so I don't read too many of them. But I love this series, and I'll keep reading the books. There was a little more sexual content than I've seen in other young adult books I've read, but the fact is that this is what really goes on with teenagers, and the author really does a good job in portraying the thoughts and feelings of young people in this age group. Another winner!
  • Malakh on April 16, 2011

I really loved this novella. For the first half of the book, I thought I was going to give it four stars (which is still really good!) but by the time I was into the second half, it was definitely a five star book. Usually with stories about angels, it's kind of hit and miss for me. This novella was a hit. It was creative, well written, and well edited. The author did a great job entertaining me!
  • Office Politics on July 30, 2011

I really, really enjoyed reading this book. It was packed full of humor, but at the same time, addressed real issues. I found myself laughing my head off at the funny situations Frannie got into, but I also felt her pain. This book kept me entertained the whole time I was reading it, and I found it hard to put down. Sharon Gerlach has shown, once again, that she has a great writing style that can keep a reader hooked and begging for more.
  • The Secret Dreams of Sarah-Jane Quinn on Aug. 10, 2011

Wow, I'm not sure where to start. Office Politics was awesome, but this book was even better. There's humor sprinkled all through this book, but there are some VERY serious issues involved in the story. One thing I like about Sharon Gerlach's writing is that she always pulls you into the story. You feel for the characters and go through everything with them. I didn't want the book to end. And, I have to admit, reading this book made me late for work a few mornings!
  • The Earl's Inconvenient Wife on July 31, 2012

I really loved this book! I've read some of Ruth Ann Nordin's western romances, but this was her first Regency, and it was a VERY entertaining read. I had trouble putting this one down. It was nicely paced throughout the story, not a dull moment anywhere. I can't wait for the next in the series to come out!
