Smashwords Interview

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is entirely responsible for my success. When I gave up on the traditional publisher route in 2010, after numerous rejections, I was convinced my dream of publishing my books was doomed. Then I read a blog interview with a successful Smashwords author and decided that the indie route might be worth a try. My books had been gathering dust on my hard drive for about 20 years at that stage. I felt I had nothing to lose. It was the indie route or nothing. The success of my books via Smashwords stunned me. I was over the moon and pinching myself daily. It seemed too good to be true. The fabulous reviews the books got blew me away. It totally changed my life. After a few months, I was able to give up my day job and dedicate myself to writing full time, which is what I'd always wanted to do. Thank you Mark and Smashwords, you made all my dreams come true!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Exploring fantastic worlds and meeting the amazing characters who populate them. I love all my heroes and heroines, so following their stories and sharing in their trials and tribulations is a wonderful adventure. As a 'channeller', writing is as effortless for me as reading. The stories just appear in my mind as I write, fully formed, and all I have to do is chronicle them for the future. I started writing stories in school, just for fun, and so that I could read them again. That continued until I wrote my first series - Slave Empire - when I was in my mid-twenties. When I'm writing, I'm transported into the other world, and this world becomes inconsequential, so it's the greatest form of escapism for me.

  • Horrotica on Aug. 17, 2011

Think horror meets erotica and you'll have an idea of the contents of this chilling horror anthology, where giant mantises feast on human heads and werewolves prowl the local parking lot in search of victims. These five stories will either give you nightmares or make your heart thump with excitement, depending on whether erotic horror turns you on or off. It's a novel combination - at least, for me - so if you enjoy your hair being raised, you'll love these short sojourns into the realms of turned on terror.
  • Legends of Origin 1 - Sanctuary for the Devil on Oct. 22, 2011

When Liam travels to an alien world in search of the Garden of Eden, which he believes holds the answers to the mystery of mankind’s origins, he finds himself caught up in a battle supreme between good and evil. A courageous monk helps him on his quest, but his companion and friend, Joshua, falls prey to the evil machinations of the land’s ruler, who is in league with Lucifer himself. In this strange world, Liam discovers wondrous magical beasts, some of which help him and others that fight on the side of evil, as well as supernatural companions who offer their aid. The Garden of Origin, as it is known on this world, is a mythical place whose existence is as steeped in legend as it is on Earth, yet he must find and enter it if he is to succeed in saving the world, and possibly the universe, from the Devil. In Sanctuary for the Devil, Finaughty takes her readers on a rip-roaring quest through a world much like our own, only with magical marvels that spice up an already scintillating story and make it a genuine page-turner. Thrills, adventure and mysteries abound in a tantalising tale that is only the first instalment of a soon to be penned series. My only gripe is the lack of romance, but for those who revel in fantasy adventure, the almost all-male cast of characters will delight and divert.

  • Ashes to Ashes on Jan. 01, 2012

When Michelle makes the fateful and impulsive decision to steal the ashes of her dead enemy at his funeral to ensure his demise, she has no idea the storm of consequences she is about to unleash. Mathieu’s brother, Pierre, seeks to protect her from her rash course of action, and becomes a reluctant guardian with stalking tendencies, enough to freak out the most worldly wise girl. The plot takes a romantic twist as their relationship blossoms while the story develops dark overtones of danger and occult horror. Although I am not a fan of horror, this novel has healthy doses of adventure, intrigue and one of my favourite genres, romance. All of these combine to keep the reader turning the page to find out what manner of mystery will be revealed or unravelled next. This fast-paced story takes many gripping twists and turns, but I defy anyone to predict the ending! It will keep you guessing to the last page, and perhaps even beyond. Ideal reading material for anyone who enjoys a dark and twisted romantic tale with a truly original finale!
